About Us

Who Are We?

Westmoreland Walks began in 2001 with a simple, heartfelt idea: that together, a small group of determined women could make a lasting difference in the fight against breast cancer. Each of our founders had been personally touched by the disease—some bravely faced their own diagnosis, others walked alongside loved ones through treatment, and all shared a commitment to bring hope and support to their community.

What started as a grassroots effort has grown into a vibrant, community-driven organization whose mission remains clear:

  • Raise awareness of breast cancer throughout Westmoreland County.
  • Fund vital research grants in Pennsylvania to bring us closer to a cure.
  • Provide hands-on support to breast cancer patients, survivors, and families in our local community.

Westmoreland Walks is guided by a volunteer board of directors—neighbors, friends, and family members who dedicate their time and talents to ensure that every dollar raised goes directly toward our mission. With no paid staff or costly overhead, our organization is powered by passion, generosity, and the unwavering belief that every step counts.

Board of Directors:

  • Kathy Brown – President
  • Trish Smock – Vice President
  • Pattie Jones – Recording Secretary
  • Debbie Weinstein – Corresponding Secretary
  • Cindy Shaffer – Treasurer

Together with an incredible network of sponsors, in-kind donors, volunteers, and community supporters, we take bold steps toward a future free from breast cancer.

What Do We Do?

Westmoreland Walks, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Our mission is to raise breast cancer awareness, provide funds for Pennsylvania-based breast cancer research, and support local women with breast cancer and their families. Westmoreland Walks is a volunteer-run non-profit organization with no payroll or assigned office space. Westmoreland Walks speaks to, and for, those in treatment and survivors.

Each year, Westmoreland Walks hosts a series of uplifting, community-centered fundraising events designed to not only raise funds, but to also spread hope, awareness, and joy. Our events bring people together-survivors, families, friends, and supporters-to celebrate strength and resilience while investing in a cure. Every event we host combines community spirit with purpose, ensuring that after covering costs, all funds directly fuel our mission-driven programs.

The Pink Ribbon Walk is our signature event and a tribute to the survivors in our community. Join us on October 3, 2026 for the 25th anniversary walk. Our other events include:

  • Spa Serenity Day – Spring 2026 at the Whispering Woods Spa at Oak Lodge (Stahlstown, PA)
  • First Annual Pink Ribbon Gala – Saturday, May 2nd, 2026 at the Live Casino (Greensburg, PA)
  • Pink Ribbon Walk – Saturday, October 5 | Twin Lakes Park (Greensburg, PA)
  • Sereni-Tea Fundraiser – November 2026 at the Victorian Lady of Academy Hill (Greensburg, PA)

Every event we host combines community spirit with purpose, ensuring that after covering costs, all funds directly fuel our mission-driven programs.

Where Does Our Money Go?

All funds raised are donated to the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition or allocated to:

Pink Angel Fund

Established in 2013, this compassionate program provides immediate financial relief for families facing hardships during treatment. Whether it’s covering insurance co-pays, purchasing lymphedema sleeves, or providing groceries and meals, the Pink Angel Fund helps ease burdens so patients can focus on healing.

“Breast Bag Ever”

Launched in 2023, this new initiative provides items of comfort and support for women in Westmoreland and surrounding counties who are embarking on their breast cancer treatment journey. Small touches of kindness—blankets, journals, skincare, and more—help ease the road ahead with encouragement and support. To date, we have met and provided bags to 100 newly diagnosed women. For more information, email westmorelandwalks@gmail.com.

Pink Ribbon Scholarship Fund

Established in 2010 through the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County, our scholarships provide financial support to graduating Westmoreland County high school seniors whose lives have been impacted by breast cancer. To date, we’ve allocated $116,000 in scholarships.

Spa Serenity Day

More than just a day at the spa—this is a chance for local women diagnosed with breast cancer to be nurtured, celebrated, and supported. Since its start, over 320 survivors have enjoyed complimentary treatments, inspirational workshops, and a reminder that they are never alone on this journey.

The next Spa Serenity Day will occur in the spring of 2026. We are currently updating our application process. To nominate a family member or friend, email westmorelandwalks@gmail.com.
